Six Degrees MD demystifies 'scary' social media

Added 29 June 2009

This month’s issue of B2B Marketing features an article by Brett Matthews on using social media. Its premise is that a lot of businesses still find the concept of social media 'scary' but that ignoring them is not an option, no matter how fragmented, evolutionary and uncontrollable the medium is.

And here at Six Degrees, we couldn’t agree more – even though we also firmly believe that it’s just another channel, not the reinvention of the wheel.

Accordingly, Jennifer Janson is quoted in the article stating that dealing with social media is very much like dealing with any other channel:

“The challenge is understanding whether your target audiences use social media, and if so, how.”

While businesses’ caution with regard to using social media is understandable, Jennifer stresses that you should at least listen in and monitor what’s being talked about:

“If you don’t know what is being said about your company, your industry or your market, then you can’t hope to play a role in influencing it.”

If you’d like to find out more about how to tackle the 'social media monster' effectively, we’d be happy to share our white paper on social media strategies with you. Please email me or leave a comment here with your email address.
