The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in the UK is working with Six Degrees to help promote its Fight Hunger Walk The World (www.fighthunger.org) initiative in London, which will culminate in a 5km walk through the capital on Sunday 13 May.
Designed to highlight the ongoing struggle to eradicate global hunger, which kills one child every five seconds, Walk The World is a global awareness-raising event that takes place in the UK and across consecutive time zones around the world. Last year, over 760,000 people in 118 countries and 420 locations took part and organisers are hoping for record numbers this year. Six Degrees will be donating its time and media relations skills alongside other Eurocom Worldwide network partner agencies in a number of other countries. “This year’s event is about raising awareness and much-needed funds for the plight of the 400 million people who suffer extreme poverty and hunger every day,” according to Bideesha Basu Ahuja from the UN World Food Programme. “Walk the World is an amazing event that is capturing the hearts and minds of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Last year, we had more than 1,000 people walking in London and this year we want to make it bigger and better. Anyone interested in signing up to the Walk should visit fighthunger.org/london or text WALK to 60123.” Hunger takes the lives of 25,000 people every single day, many of them children. There are 400 million hungry people in the world and the UN WFP provides meals for 21.7m children through its School’s Feeding Programme. Their goal is to halve hunger by 2015. What is Fight Hunger Walk the World? The Fight Hunger initiative of the United Nations World Food Programme is a collaboration with non-governmental organisations, national and international institutions, the private sector and other segments of society to educate the public and raise funds in support of the goal of ending child hunger by 2015. Fight Hunger’s flagship event is Walk the World, an annual event that calls upon policy-makers and governments – whether in rich or poor countries – to focus more resources and priority on children and their nutrition. The London Walk The World is on Sunday, 13 May 2007 and is a level 5km walk starting at 11.00am from The Scoop, More London Riverside, London SE1 2DB along the South Bank. Details on how to get there are available at http://www.morelondon.co.uk/thescoop/info.php. |
